1 Kings – Wisdom, Obedience, and Divided Hearts
A new year begins, and our Bible journey moves into 1 Kings, a book that explores leadership, wisdom, and the consequences of divided devotion. It opens with great promise and slowly reveals how even God-given wisdom must be guarded by obedience.
1 Kings reminds us that beginnings matter — but so does what we do with what God gives us.
Key Themes from 1 Kings:
- God-Given Wisdom – Wisdom is a gift from God, meant to be used with humility.
- Wholehearted Devotion – God desires undivided hearts, not partial obedience.
- The Impact of Leadership Choices – Decisions made at the top ripple outward to many.
Key Stories or Passages:
- Solomon Asks for Wisdom (1 Kings 3): Solomon chooses wisdom over wealth or power.
Lesson: When we seek God first, He equips us for the responsibility we carry. - The Building of the Temple (1 Kings 6–8): A place set apart for God’s presence.
Lesson: God desires to dwell with His people, not just be honoured in words. - Solomon’s Decline (1 Kings 11): A heart slowly pulled away from full obedience.
Lesson: Compromise begins quietly but leads to separation if left unchecked.
Practical Applications:
- Begin the year by asking God for wisdom in your decisions, plans, and priorities.
- Examine areas where your devotion may be divided — habits, influences, or distractions.
- Commit one area of leadership or responsibility fully to God this month.
Reflection Questions:
- Where do I need God’s wisdom most right now?
- Are there areas of my life where obedience has become selective?
- How can I guard my heart against gradual compromise?
Closing Encouragement:
Lord, give me wisdom that leads to obedience, not pride. Help me walk with an undivided heart, honouring You not only in my words, but in my daily choices. As this year begins, may my life be shaped by faithfulness and trust in You.
